We went to MONDO last night for a church fundraiser (thanks Nicole and Debbie). They’ve tweaked the menu but some of our old favorites survived, like calamari and the lasagna. Genna loved the crab ravioli with a cream sauce, I had a diet friendly veal cutlet covered with a mound of mixed greens which was tasty, and the guys really enjoyed a new dish – braised short ribs with “dirty polenta.” The polenta is spiked with cheese and spices. Deadly delicious.
Went to Gencarelli’s about two weeks ago. Had been there twice previously and had a good experience. However, two weeks ago I had one of the worst dining experiences of my life. Wait staff ignored us when we entered the restaurant. When they finally seated us, they tried seating us at a window seat with the sunshine glaring in on the seats. We asked to be moved, and they had to “think about it” although it was only 5:00 pm and the restaurant was empty. The veal dish was tough, the steak dish was inedible/fatty and tough. We complained to our waiter who told us he would tell the owner. No one came over to us to discuss the issue with out dinner. We should have returned it immediately. Instead, we left most of our food over, paid for it, and will never return. Very poor customer service, and low quality provisions.
Just had to comment on my experience at Gencarelli’s last night. The earliest reservation was 9:00, but, it was worth the wait. I had been there about 6 mos. ago and was really dying for a good red sauce and remembered how good it was there. The place was standing room only and our table was ready. I can’t believe what a great dinner we had. 4 of us ordered the fresh mozzarella bruschetta type app. (out of this world), artichoke and calamari and I have never seen an artichoke so large and delicious. Then of course I had to have the Sunday Gravy the others had ribeye, Pumpkin ravioli and chicken Giambotta. We all left with leftovers for lunch and finished with a great dessert with berries & cannoli cream in a pastry shell. Also bought a jar of their gravy they sell. This is really the best Italian food in Montclair.
